House Democrats are threatening to move forward with Articles of Impeachment against President Trump, if VP Mike Pence and other cabinet officials don’t invoke the 25th Amendment to remove him. MS Congressman Michael Guest opposes the move, calling instead for leaders to focus on uniting the country.
Congressman Guest released the following statement in response to these actions:
“Last week was one of the more difficult weeks for our nation in recent history. The pictures that appeared across the nation on television and computer screens will never rest easily in the minds of Americans. Now, it’s vitally important that we turn our attention toward healing our nation following the events that took place at the Capitol, and I encourage all Americans to focus on the common values we share as citizens of this great country and to put aside our perceived differences. In this spirit, I believe the resolution urging Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment against President Trump and the articles of impeachment that are being discussed in the House of Representatives would be counterproductive and divide our country even further. As we begin preparing for a transfer of power from one administration to another in less than 10 days, I believe it is vitally important to allow our nation to heal, and I believe these actions that are being pushed on the House floor would prevent our nation from beginning the healing process. At this decisive moment in our history, we must focus on uniting our country and avoid stoking the fiery tensions currently consuming our nation.”
Congressman Michael Guest represents Mississippi’s Third Congressional District.

Former MS Senator Trent Lott thinks Nancy Pelosi and the House are making a big mistake:
“I’ve been listening pretty carefully to what President-Elect Joe Biden has to say. If you listen, he really is saying wait, I don’t need this hanging over my first few days as President.”
Lott went on to say the President will be out of office in several days. “So then they’re gonna send an impeachment resolution over to the Senate, when they need to be moving on pandemic legislation, infrastructure, and appropriations that we need for the good of our country.”

Congressman Bennie Thompson–the longest-serving African-American elected official in the State of Mississippi and the lone Democrat in the Mississippi Congressional Delegation–is supporting the effort to impeach Trump. Thompson issued a statement after violence erupted in our nation’s capitol last week, calling Trump “a direct threat to the homeland.” In a House Homeland Security Committee statement last week, he said, “Never in my life did I ever expect to see a sitting president incite violent extremists at a rally and, after they stormed both the House and Senate chambers, raised the Confederate flag and erected a noose, tell them in a video that he loved them,”
