Within a 24-hour span, the world’s richest woman MacKenzie Scott has donated a combined $31 million to two of Mississippi’s HBCUs.
On Tuesday, Alcorn State announced that the university had received a $25 million gift from Scott, and then on Wednesday, Tougaloo College released that they had also received a multi-million-dollar donation from the American novelist and philanthropist.
“We are deeply grateful to philanthropist MacKenzie Scott for her generosity that enables us to advance major initiatives at Tougaloo College,” Tougaloo President Dr. Carmer Walters said. “This remarkable gift is impactful and ensures the college continues its forward momentum. Furthermore, it will encourage others to join us to further our mission of educating and preparing self-directed leaders capable of navigating a rapidly changing global landscape. This is an incredibly exciting time for Tougaloo College.”
The one-time, $6 million gift will be placed in the college’s recently established “Preserving and Advancing Excellence Fund,” which was created in order to support major initiatives within the school.
Scott, who is the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is definitely epitomizing the season of giving as she has donated over $4 billion to 384 organizations in just the past four months alone.
