A ruling by a federal judge will not change Mississippi’s process for electing a governor or other statewide offices.
U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan III said he would not issue a preliminary injunction to stop the current process.
The constitution requires a statewide candidate to win a majority of the popular vote and a majority of the state’s 122 House districts. If neither candidate wins both, the election is decided by the House.
A lawsuit recently challenged the process saying the system is unconstitutional. Jordan said he would issue a separate order regarding state officials’ request to dismiss the lawsuit.
