The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting Mississippi’s largest one-day rise in COVID-19 cases with 1,230.

Today’s report represents the second straight day that the number of new cases has surpassed 1,000, and it brings the state’s total number of cases up to 39,797. 1,308 Mississippians have now passed away from the virus following the confirmation of 18 additional deaths.

There are now 130 active outbreaks in Mississippi long-term care facilities. Hospitalizations rose once again, along with the number of ICU beds in use.

With cases and hospitalizations rapidly increasing, UMMC Vice Chancellor Dr. LouAnn Woodward explained that the state’s largest hospital is feeling the effects of the state’s strained healthcare system.

“We have been full for a couple of weeks,” she said. “This morning, we are about 25 beds oversubscribed with 15 of those being critical care beds, so that means 15 ICU patients are being taken care of somewhere else in the hospital.”

Wednesday, Dr. Deborah Birx, the Response Coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force, met with Governor Tate Reeves to discuss the state’s ongoing response to the pandemic.
