The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) has confirmed 1,212 new cases of COVID-19 with 17 additional deaths.

Today’s report comes after Friday’s record-worst number as the United States hit an all-time high in coronavirus cases, surpassing 80,000 for the first time.

Hospitalizations also continue to hover around the 550-600 mark, according to the latest data provided by the MSDH.

Earlier this week, Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs warned Mississippians to “get ready” for a fall surge.

“Without a doubt, we’re going into a fall surge. It’s undeniable. All the indicators are moving in the wrong direction. We’re seeing more cases. Our deaths are starting to creep up…and our hospitalizations are increasing pretty rapidly,” Dobbs said. “So, get ready.”

Even though the mask mandate in Mississippi expired a few weeks ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still encourages everyone to mask up and practice social distancing.
