One day after reporting the state’s highest number of COVID-related deaths, the Mississippi State Department of Health is now reporting the highest one-day increase in cases.

The report of 3,023 new cases brings the state’s total up to 213,055. With the confirmation of 29 additional deaths, 4,747 Mississippians have now passed away from the virus.

Overall hospitalizations have risen above 1,300 once again the latest data from the MSDH.

During a press conference this morning, State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers and Senior Deputy and Director of Health Protection Jim Craig provided the latest update on vaccine distribution in Mississippi.

So far, the state has received around 120,000 doses between the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines with 17,000 doses administered as part of Phase 1A of the MSDH’s vaccination plan. The next step of the plan will begin next week with the MSDH, through a partnership with UMMC, setting up 18 drive-thru sites across the state where healthcare workers can make an appointment to receive the shot.
