David McRae today announced the State Treasury has returned a half-million dollars in unclaimed property to Mississippi’s economy since the COVID-19 outbreak began escalating in mid-March.
“Our number one priority is to find the rightful owners of unclaimed property and return the money as quickly as possible,” said McRae. “We are thrilled to have infused a half-million dollars into the state’s economy during the coronavirus pandemic already, and we’re just getting started. Please visit treasury.ms.gov to begin your search. Even during the COVID-19 outbreak, our team is processing claims and returning the money to Mississippians.”
Last week, McRae announced unclaimed property claims can be notarized remotely, according to a new order from Governor Tate Reeves. Before having your claims form remotely notarized, check with your notary to see if they are authorized to offer remote notarization and can forego the in-person requirements for notarization. While the State Treasury continues to process claims, the office remains closed to the public, and staff are working remotely in line with the recommendations of the CDC, Governor Reeves, and the State Health Officer. The State Treasury hopes to re-open to the public as quickly as is advisable.
